Scenic Photos from Tucson Arizona…

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

These pictures are from back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, and are various shots from around Tucson Arizona. This has been a single html page on this site for a few years now, and I’ve decided to move them here into this new blog system for easier management.

Tanque Verde Falls - Down at the bottom of the lower falls, looking up at the canyon walls.

Mount Lemmon - Part way up the mountain at one of the scenic overlooks.

Mt Lemmon - Trees somewhere around the top of the mountain.

Tanque Verde Falls - Fresh water at the lower falls. It’s rare to find water, but best chances used to be around February of each year.

I’ve put these back up by request, and will try to remember to add the captions to each picture again eventually.

These are personal pictures and not intended for use as commercial stock photos.

An 8 Hour Drive for Dunkin Doughnuts…

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Almost :) Last Saturday we dropped A off at a friend’s house to spend the night, then drove into Roswell for something to do. And driving into a larger city made me miss Tucson, so I suggested we go… Just to get Dunkin Doughnuts :D

Now Tucson is an 8 hour drive from where we live at the moment, one way. But when we lived in California we sometimes - on the spur of the moment with no planning - made a run to Tucson for Sonic. The first time it happened because we had no clue where to find a Sonic in the L.A. area, and in reality of course it was just an excuse for a road trip. But it was fun to spontaneously head out of state on a whim.

We suppressed our urge to go to Tucson that night this weekend though, and when we got home I looked online to see where the nearest Dunkin Doughnuts might be - because I really do want some soon. We discovered our options are either Albuquerque or El Paso… both a 4-5 hour drive - one way. Urggg. So yes I suspect strongly that we will head out to Tucson for Doughnuts soon. If we’ll be driving that long anyway, we should at least go somewhere we enjoy hmmm? ;)

Graduating Marines at Parade Rest

In my opinion, the official graduation ceremony was just for show. The “real” graduation took place on Family day (Thursday) when the boys got their official pins. I’ll have pictures of that up here soon…

Scenes of San Diego Bay

On the MCRD base, there is a restaurant called the Bay View, and these scenes were shot from there…

Marine Recruit Motivational Run

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

One of the big events on family day at the MCRD is The Motivational Run. This picture shows part of a platoon of recruits with their drill instructor running beside them and yelling commands.

Marine Recruits Doing the Moto Run

If you go to this event when your own new Marine graduates, you may find this tip helpful:

Don’t try to get a good view point under the arches. You’ll be in the wrong place. When standing under the arches looking at the run area, you’ll see a parking lot. And this is where you need to be. There are signs with platoon numbers on them at the start of the parking lot, and those signs are the “front” of the viewing line for the Moto run. The recruits will run between that location and the arches.

If you can’t get to the very front of that viewing area though, then go to the very back. Once the platoons run one direction, they’ll circle around and run behind the crowd too. So anyone at the very back will have a “front row” position at the end of the run.
