Corn Sprouts & New Plantings

First corn sprout in my vegetable garden
I got my very first corn sprout Wednesday. I found three actually, one was almost an inch up while two others had just peaked their tips through the soil surface.

I haven’t done a great job tracking my planting dates and details, so this post is an attempt to catch up a bit.

The corn sprouts that popped up were planted roughly seven to eight days ago–I think last Tuesday or Wednesday.

The very first batch of seeds I planted were robbed by something. I’ve seen a big jackrabbit around, lots of lizards, and we’ve heard what sounds like turkeys wandering around in the bushes too. Something dug up the seeds from the first plantings though, so I suspect that’s why they never sprouted. This batch of new sprouts is near the trailer where the dog can scare off anything that might come seed hunting ;)
Pole bean planting bed
This past Sunday–April 11th–I planted a batch of Kentucky pole beans next to the trailer. They should help give us a bit more shade and coolness as the heat of summer comes in. I also planted a small patch of lettuce near a bush to give it some shade from the heat of the Arizona sun, and I put a small patch of onions and bell peppers near my camp stove in the kitchen area. If those crop up well I’ll probably thin them out to other locations so they’re not too crowded, because I always seem to put seeds way too close together when I first plant them.

I found several tiny little clover like leaves in the lettuce patch this morning and I’m hoping they may be sprouts but it’s a little too soon to tell.

Yesterday-Thursday April 15th-I planted two new corn hills each with a cucumber in the middle. I also buried two sprouting white potatoes and started two sweet potato slips in moist sawdust. I may be a little late in getting both types of potatoes started but we’ll see how it goes.

If it goes well, I should have sweet potatoes ready for Thanksgiving :)
