Foods We’ve Been Eating While Camping

One of the challenges we’ve had during our travel adventures is figuring out what kinds of meals we can cook. Whether we’re on the road driving to a new spot or we’re camped out in a forest somewhere, food is not as easy as it is in a cozy house or apartment.
At the moment we have no fridge for example, so keeping anything cold for long is out of the question. Eventually we plan to get a propane fridge/freezer combo unit but for now we’ve primarily been going simple and cheap. When we first buy supplies for a new camping spot we can pick up a small pack of fresh hamburger or chicken and put it into our “fridge cooler” with some ice. That lasts at least 1-2 days, so we have time to drive to the next camping spot, set up the campsite, and cook the food before it goes bad.
Other than that though, we’ve been eating primarily canned and dried foods. Corned beef hash, spagettios, and ravioli have become staples. We also buy canned chicken and dried pasta sides (like garlic or alfredo) to cook together as one meal, and we make tuna with macaroni and cheese frequently too. Recently we started making Ranch style beans as the protein, and rice broccoli and cheese as our starch.
I’m a big meat eater. If I go too long without a decent source of it I get pretty cranky. I don’t care much for canned meat so it gets old at times. When we’re on the road or back in Tucson we tend to make the rounds of Wendy’s, Carl’s Junior (I recently discovered their Portabella Mushroom Burger and *love* it!) and Jack in the Box buying huge meaty sandwiches if we’ve got the extra cash. A couple of times I’ve given in and spent the money for KFC when I really needed lots of fresh meat to eat, and lately I’ve had a hankering for Arby’s
Eventually we need to find a source of dried meat or we need to start making our own. I’m thinking of trying that once we’ve picked up a new fish tank.
We have instant oatmeal to eat for breakfast when we want it, but so far we’ve been eating primarily once each day. We also keep a jar of peanut butter on hand. I snack on spoons of that sometimes and once in awhile I’ll put it on bread for a sandwich. Peanut butter sandwiches are a good quick meal for on the go too.
So… really simple meals and usually pretty cheap too. A recent shopping trip got me a can of tuna for $0.79 and a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for $0.99. A whole meal for two people at less than two bucks

Hmmm – is that 10 gallon aquarium that the cans are sitting in? Or is it some marketed solar oven that just resembles an aquarium?
