Whether you have problems with a simple sore throat due to a cold or the flu, you have strep throat, or you have tonsillitis, there are many home and herbal remedies which can often help. Most of these remedies work to kill both the pain and the germs or infection which are causing the problems. In many cases, an internal infection fighting herb or herbal combination should be used too. Let’s look at several of these useful remedies…

Kelp is an herb which is high in natural iodine, and iodine kills germs and bacteria. One woman has successfully used this herb for more than ten years to treat strep throat problems with her children. It can kill the strep bacteria, but it also helps as a preventative measure when sore throats occur, to keep strep from developing – particularly when it’s going around school.

Simply dissolve a gel capsule of ground kelp into warm water or strong tea. Then drink it at least once each day. Putting the Kelp into tea helps kill the taste – it is a bit gritty and nasty tasting. Taking it in tea or other liquids will bathe the throat directly, allowing the iodine to come into direct contact with the strep or other bacteria within the throat. This direct contact kills the bacteria and takes away most of the throat pain.

Garlic is another extremely useful herb for treating throat problems, and there are several ways to use it. To get almost immediate relief from throat pain, slice a piece of raw garlic and hold that in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. You can suck on the garlic piece, or simply hold it between your teeth and cheek. The garlic can make your mouth slightly sore after holding it there for several minutes, but this will go away in about a day.

The oil and odor from the garlic travels down the throat, removing the pain and killing the bacteria. You can then simply swallow the garlic or spit it out. Taking garlic by mouth – fresh or in capsule form – is an added measure which will help start killing to bacteria and infection from within, because garlic is a very strong natural antibiotic.

Onion is another extremely useful herb to help relieve sore throats and start the healing process. You can eat or suck on an onion much like the garlic piece, and you can make an onion pack to apply directly to the throat. Chop up some fresh onion – white onions are stronger than yellow, but either generally works fine – and spread it on a clean towel or cloth, then apply the onion side to the throat area which is painful. You can also mix aloe vera into the chopped onion if you have it on hand, and this will help the onion penetrate the skin better.

Take garlic and cayenne capsules, or goldenseal and cayenne, or garlic plus goldenseal plus cayenne, in pill form three times each day until the infection is gone. If you’re hypoglycemic, take Echinacea or Myrrh instead of the Golden Seal, so your blood sugar does not drop too low. Alternatively you can use the Golden Seal if you also add licorice root, because this will help counteract the natural insulin in the golden seal.
