The liver is the primary waste disposal organ in our bodies. It filters out wastes, toxins, bacteria and other poisonous substances from our blood. The liver creates bile from this waste and sends it on to the gall bladder, which in turn sends it into the small intestine. When the liver or gall bladder are having problems, the toxins may not be filtered out of blood stream well enough, or the waste may get stagnated and start leaking toxins back into the blood stream, potentially causing problems for other bodily organs and functions.

Often just keeping the bile flowing regularly will contribute towards keeping the liver and gall bladder healthy. Because when bile backs up, that can cause damage or stagnation throughout the entire system. Like the muscles in our body, if we let things stagnate too long they simply don’t work as well as they can. So just keeping things moving is an excellent way to care for your liver. With that said however, there are also several herbs that can either help to move things along, or help the liver to do its job.

These herbs help clean, heal, and maintain the liver and gall bladder:

Dandelion – This weed which grows almost everywhere is a wonderful herb packed full of vitamins and nutrients. Dandelion helps cleanse the liver by increasing it’s activity and increasing the flow of bile into the intestines. Dandelion is considered an excellent herbal remedy for treating hepatitis, which is a liver disease.

Horsetail – Another herbal diuretic, this one is useful for expelling worms and parasites. Sometimes liver and gall bladder sicknesses are due to the presence of parasites, so expelling them is considered standard procedure.

Ginger – This herb acts as a cleanser for the kidneys and bowels, and helps remove toxins from the body.

Fennel – Another herb commonly used for cooking and seasoning, it has medicinal value as well, and works in this case to help cleanse the liver.

Catnip – An herb which works well for stomach gas and cramps, it also helps with digestion and helps to clean mucus from the body.

Peppermint – This herb might best be known for using to ease colic pains in a baby, because it works wonders for reducing stomach pains and bloating caused by indigestion. Peppermint also helps expel gas from the colon and stomach, and helps clean and tone the entire body.

Yellow Dock – Another natural laxative which helps with liver congestion and expels worms and parasites. Yellow dock dissolves mucus and moves it through the system, plus it cleans the lymphatic system. Yellow dock is another herb which has been used to treat hepatitis.

Yarrow – Regulates and tones the liver along with healing affects on the glandular system.

Wood Betony – This one is good for opening obstructions of the liver and spleen.
