Sustainable Living Musings & Ideas
So the first step in our sustainable living plan is almost complete. We’re scheduled to sign the contract on the land Saturday!
Our first steps started already of course. We had to do the research on the land and offer, and this week we’ve been working on gathering up all of our stuff, washing clothes and stocking up on groceries. I’m hoping to pack it all up Saturday and go out on Sunday.
Our first weeks will be spent setting up camp. We need to clear a path to drive the jeep and trailer onto so we can make camp around the center of the property. We plan to use it like a campsite at first then build from there.
One of the first things we’ll need to do is get a well drilled. That may take a little time since it’s not cheap so we’ll be hauling water for now. We’ve also decided we want a larger camper. The cargo trailer is fine, especially when we’re camped in a roomy spot that lets us put out our chairs and table, but when bad or cold weather comes it’s definitely too small.
Once the camping site is set up I’ve got to get busy planting some vegetables. It’s late March already and for Arizona that’s a late start for things like corn. We’ve had a pretty cool and wet spring though so I’m hoping that will work in my favor.
I’m planning to plant in stages, probably about once a week for the first month: Corn, green beans, cucumbers, and melons will get grouped together, then probably potatoes, onions and bell peppers grouped in their own patches. Instead of creating rows or fields of the same thing I’m going to create small patches of companion plants.
After the initial planting I also plan to work on food storage. I don’t plan to create a root cellar yet but I am thinking about digging a hole in the ground and putting a terra cotta pot down in it to use for keeping food cold.
Hopefully I’ll remember to take pictures and post them here as I go
