Verbena Would Make a Nice Groundcover
I’ve been doing a lot of garden writing lately, and that always makes me want to do more in my own garden areas. I haven’t had a lot of time lately though, due to getting ready for our trip, but I’m hoping to do some new stuff when we return.
I have a couple of problem areas in my yard, which aren’t reached overly well by sprinklers or soaker hoses. So unless we get a lot of rain - which we actually have lately - or I remember to move the sprinklers, I end up with a strip to the side and at the very front which dry out and die easily. So I’ve been thinking about putting some drought tolerant ground covers in soon, and I’m seriously thinking about trying Verbena.
This is a beautiful plant which attracts butterflies, and it’s wonderful for growing in low water areas. Plus it spreads out nicely, and at a height of just four to five inches it stays fairly low to the ground. This means I shouldn’t have to actually cut it theoretically, because it would be within the limits of city ordinances. The trick of course though, is how well it can choke out other tough, tall growing weeds in the areas I want it to cover.
